Another miraculous landing…. or not?


First, Captain Sully lands his USAir plane in the Hudson River and all are saved. Now a plane lands at Kennedy Airport on 1/2 of its landing gear and all are saved. Great pilots and crew, right? That sure what the news says.

He is credited with saving the lives of more than 60 people during a heart-stopping emergency landing at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport when the plane’s landing gear failed to work properly. Meet America’s newest hero — Capt. Jack Conroyd.” (ABCNews, 9/27/2010))

WRONG! ABC News. Captain Jack is no hero. He’s was simply well-prepared.

It’s practice and preparation, period!

As pointed out in the book The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right, but Atul Gawande, it is the lowly checklist that enables flight crews to handle any eventuality.

A checklist is deceptively simple. In an operating room, it’s as simple as introducing each person and making sure each and everything is ready for surgery. Or it for when a plane loses one or two engine, pull out the checklist and go through the steps on how to deal with it.

The airline industry has been using checklists for years. Captain Jack used a checklist, as did the crew. Checklists prevent errors. It’s clear these pilots made no errors.
