In my job as President of Find New Customers, I visit a lot of company websites. One can learn quite a lot there.
But one thing bothers me a lot. It is 2014 and there is no excuse for not having a VP of Marketing or Chief Marketing Officer in your company. Marketing is far too important today to leave it to the novices.
To see an example of missed opportunities, take the data security industry. There are two leading competitors – Voltage Security and Protegrity. With the news in the Wall St. Journal of lost data at Home Depot and Michael Stores, these companies should be red hot. But they are not. Neither one has a marketing leader among the executives listed on their websites. Shame on their CEOs for missing this!
Content marketing, lead nurturing, lead scoring – too much gets left out without leadership. Protegrity used to be a Find New Customers client, but the CEO Suni Mushani cut off his nose to spite his face.
The really savvy marketing companies are firms like the software company ConnectWise, down here in Tampa. They have a prominent Chief Marketing Officer listed and a visit to their website shows a very savvy marketing company. For instance, a visitor to their website does not go to their home page. Instead they go to a landing page with a flagship offer and simple form. That way they can get visitors to sign up for lead nurturing.
Every company needs a VP of Marketing or Chief Marketing Officer today and he or she should be prominent on websites.
