What is the real story of someone?
A personal post on a Saturday. No post on Sunday.
In this post, I answer your questions – in this personal post.
Holding a degree in Marketing from the University of Notre Dame is a great honor. as it’s one of the best universities on Earth, As we like to say, “You can get a four year degree from anywhere, but only Notre Dame hands out 40 year degrees.” And that is true, It is the only school I applied to, unlike kids of today.
When my parents dropped me off there, I went to the elevator and I saw a man in a bathrobe with the biggest calf muscles I have ever seen. My jaw dropped at these massive muscle. Welcome to real football,.
It turned out to be Bob Golic, the ND middle linebacker, who went on to play nose tackle for the Cleveland Browns. Bob now owns a bar somewhere today. Bob is also the older brother of Mike Golic on ESPN Radio.
Born and raised in a little town along the Ohio River named Madison, And the town is named after President Madison. It is a very old town,
Two things about Madison make it unique:
- It is the only town where the entire downtown area is on the National Register of Historic Places, A visit to Madison is a step back of 100 years and it has some great mansions which were built when river traffic was big. And Southern Indiana is very hilly, unlike northern Indiana,
- It is the only town in America to own its very own race boat. The boat used to be called the Miss Madison, but is now called OhBoyOberto and it has won a lot of races, as you can see here.Madison got into the boat business when wealthy businessman Samuel Dupont gave them a race boat. They crashed it and he gave them another one.Thank you, Sam.One of the most amazing races was when Gentleman Jim McCormick took the dog of a boat Miss Madison with an engine from a WWII fighter and won the Gold Cup – the biggest race of the year, beating much faster boats. (see this photo)I was there on the riverbank in 1971 when it happened, although I was very young then. It was like the 1980 hockey team winning the Gold medal. These things just don’t happen and it became the movie Madison. Here’s the write-up on the movie from Amazon:
The Miss Madison may have seen better days, but she’s about to go out in a blaze of glory. The pride of Madison, Indiana, the dilapidated hydroplane’s been entered in the 1971 Gold Cup Championship race, whose $50,000 prize money has been raised by the town itself.
These boats race on rivers and lakes.
I attended Pope John XVII Elementary School and Madison High School. I played receiver in high school, but I was a bad player on a bad team, but it was a lot of fun. That all changed when I went to college at The University of Notre Dame. That is when football got in my blood for the rest of my life.
